The Three Energy Locks – Maha Bandha

images-2_copy1

Bandhas are interior, muscular energy locks. These locks control the flow of energy in the body, very similar to the way a dam controls the flow of energy of a river, harnessing its incredible power. The ability to connect with these locks tends to be challenging at first, but with practice and experience awareness develops creating stability and control over our poses and body.  There are three bandhas. The Mula Bandha, or Root Lock, is felt by engaging or lifting the pelvic floor upwards toward the navel. The Uddiyana Bandha, or Core Lock, is activated by pulling the space below the navel, the pit of the abdomen, in and up. The Jalandhara Bandha, or Throat Lock, is activated by pressing the chin to the chest. When all three bandhas are engaged at the same time, it is known as the Maha Bandha, or the Great Lock.
